International Fraternity History
Delta Upsilon was founded in 1834 at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts when 31 men came together in response to the activities of the two secret societies on the Williams campus. It is the 6th oldest international, all-male, college fraternity. It is also the first non-secret fraternity ever founded.
Delta Upsilons mission is Building Better Men. We achieve this through our non-secrecy, non-hazing and our four founding principles. Our principles
are a declaration of our purpose and serve as high goals to inspire excellence. They are the essence of our brotherhood.
The Promotion of Friendship
The Development of Character
The Diffusion of Liberal Culture
The Advancement of Justice
Delta Upsilon’s vision is to be “the premier men’s fraternity committed to Building Better Men for a global society through service, leadership development and lifelong personal growth of our diverse membership.” Delta Upsilon has initiated over 110,000 men since its founding. In 2009, the International Fraternity celebrated its 175th anniversary.
