  •    The Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation

Since its founding in 1949, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation has helped create learning opportunities that developed character, promote friendship, diffuse liberal culture, and advance justice. Foundation-supported programs address the unmet need among students to learn how to lead effectively and ethically -experience which serves them for a lifetime. Annual tax-deductible gifts from alumni and friends of Delta Upsilon provide the means for the Foundation to reach an ever-changing population of 3,000 undergraduate brothers each year. Without this essential support, many of the programs described below would be eliminated. The Foundation will continue to bridge the educational gap between what one must know to succeed academically, and what one must learn to succeed in life. The following is a brief description of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation's programs and services of support to Delta Upsilon.

    The Leadership Institute

2009 marks the 61st anniversary of Delta Upsilon's annual Leadership Conference (known today as the Leadership Institute). Its longevity is a testament to its popularity with an impact on more than 15,000 brothers who have attended the program over the years. The Institute prepares each attendee to return to campus with a series of goals, which will make him a more effective leader and more successful person. A wide variety of seminar topics includes everything from how to motivate peers to financial management, and all Institute participants are exposed to outstanding keynote remarks from distinguished alumni. Faculty and staff present interactive programs for the Promotion of Friendship, the Development of Character, the Diffusion of Liberal Culture, and the Advancement of Justice. Each attendee bear the responsibility to transfer and communicate what he learns at the Institute to his chapter brothers on campus. In this way, the program seeks to impact the quality of each Delta Upsilon chapter every year.

    The Winter Educational Foundation

In 1995, the first Delta Upsilon Presidents Academy was held and has since attracted more than 1,000 of the top elected undergraduate officers in our Fraternity. Held in January of each year, the Academy's curriculum targets the leadership development needs of our chapter presidents across North America. Academy participants work throughout a three-day program, learning the principles of goal setting, building consensus, confrontation, and recognizing the contributions and talents of others. In 1999, a new component called the Recruitment Symposium was added to the curriculum for the benefit of the Vice President of Recruitment officers of each chapter. These brothers attend sessions that are designed to provide our recruitment officers with the resources and tools necessary to recruit new men into the Delta Upsilon brotherhood. Together with the Presidents Academy, the two segments form what is now known as the Delta Upsilon Winter Educational Conference.

    Charles Evans Hughes DUEL Program

The Delta Upsilon Emerging Leaders Program was developed to identify and provide effective leadership training for newer brothers (first or second year) from different chapters. These individuals would experience many of the components of the member development program in a condensed period of time, and help them develop into chapter leaders in the very near future. In 2001, the program was partially endowed by a grant originally bequeathed in 1981 that the Fraternity recieved from Mrs. Elizabeth Gossett, the daughter of Brother Charles Evans Hughes, Colgate and Brown 1881.

    A New Chapter in Leadership

In 2004, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation embarked upon a three-year comprehensive endowment campaign to secure the future of its undergraduate leadership programming, particularly at the chapter level. With the help of alumni and friends, the Foundation has raised gifts in support of chapter leadership programming, training and development. These results allow Delta Upsilon to provide over 75 chapter leadership scholarships, thus increasing undergraduate attendance at Dela Upsilon's impactful leadership programs such as the Leadership Institute and the Charles Evans Hughes Delta Upsilon Emergin Leaders Program.

    The McQuaid Scholarships

Honoring Brother James D. McQuaid, Chicago '60, Delta Upsilon's president from 1994-2000, the McQuaid Scholarship Fund offers $2,500 undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships each year to DU's through a select application porcess. The scholarships are presented each year at the Leadership Institute.

    The Oak Circle Scholarships

Established in 2002, the Oak Circle Scholarships provide $1,000 scholarships to undergradute brothers through funds established by undergraduate giving.

    Alumni Volunteer Conference

The Alumni Volunteer Conference is the premier alumni program for Delta Upsilon, designed to provide alumni volunteers with up-to-date information on current issues pertaining to their volunteer position within the Fraternity. In addition, the conference provides alumni attendees the oppertunity to connect with undergraduate brothers, Fraternity staff and leadership, and other alumni volunteers. It provides an excellent venue for all alumni advisors and officers to share ideas and discuss the common issues that affect them on a regular basis. All alumni are encouraged to attend, as it is a tremendous way to get involved in Delta Upsilon at many different levels. The Alumni Volunteer Conference debuted at the 1995 Leadership Institue in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

    Team DU

Indianapolis is home to the Delta Upsilon Headquarters facility, and the dedicated staff of the Fraternity and the Educational Foundation. While the term Team DU refers to the entire cadre of staff, the Educational Foundation makes a grant each year to underwrite certain costs of the Leadership Consultant Program. Leadership Consultants travel to all Delta Upsilon chapters and colonies each year, providing suggestions for improvement and encouragement at each stop. Each Leadership Consultant completes a visit by furnishing a written report to the chapter, providing strategies and recomendations to help each Delta Upsilon chapter reach its goals and imporve operations.

Internships at the Delta Upsilon Headquarters

Undergraduates may apply for summer employment as interns at the Delta Upsilon International Headquarters in Indianapolis. Interns play an important rolse in the planning process and execution of the Leadership Institute. They also help create and update printed guides, manuals, and newsletters for use by chapters during the school year.

    The Delta Upsilon Quarterly

The Delta Upsilon Quarterly is partially underwritten by the Educational Foundation, in order to provide every Delta Upsilon alumnus, undergraduate, and parent with a copy of our Annual Report. The Quarterly is the oldest continuosly publsihed magazine in the fraternity world, having bee first published in 1882. Delta Upsilon has never missed a scheduled issue since the magazine was founded.

    Chapter Educational Accounts

Donors can make gifts restricted for use by a named chapter to build, renovate, or furnish educational areas and equipment in a Delta Upsilon chapter house. Scholarship funds can also be established for use by specific chapters. Gifts to establish or rebuild an existing Chapter Educational Account are tax deductable.

    Regional Leadership Seminars

The Regional Leadership Seminars constitute another leadership education outreach program for our undergraduate brothers. The seminars are held each winter on a variety of Delta Upsilon campus locations throughout North America. Issues are exposed and discussed that affect chapters in particular geographic areas. The program reaches a broader spectrum of our undergraduate membership as many chapters send five or more representatives (often younger chapter leaders) to the seminars.
